NPC / Character Brief

Borderlands 2, Nathan Maliwan

An unofficial NPC-design sample demonstrating recurring quest integration, comedic characterization, escalating combat encounters, reward planning, and franchise-appropriate dialogue.

Borderlands 2, Nathan Maliwan

Overview

This sample explores a recurring NPC concept designed for Borderlands 2. The character is intended to support the franchise’s comedic tone, exaggerated personalities, and pre-existing mission structure through escalating combat quests.

Nathan Maliwan, Character Role

  • Hostile recurring quest giver
  • Miniboss designer
  • Comedic antagonist

Gameplay Function

Nathan Maliwan repeatedly challenges players to beat his experimental eridium-powered combat robots. Each encounter escalates the complexity, danger, and instability of Nathan’s designs as he desperately tries to prove himself and kill the players.

Narrative Design

Nathan is an arrogant Maliwan technician obsessed with surpassing Hyperion’s robot designs through reckless experimentation with eriduim. He views the players as disposable test subjects and is increasingly frustrated at their continued survival and destruction of his robots.

Reward Structure

  • Experimental Maliwan technology
  • Guaranteed eridium drops

Dialogue Samples

  • “I am Nathan Maliwan, a technician from Maliwan industries and cousin twice removed from the current CEO.”
  • “I require assistance. You seem brutish enough to help.”
  • “You mouth-breathing simpletons! Do you know how much money it takes to design and build a robot remotely?”
