Original Card Game Prototype

Holdout

Holdout is an original 2–6 player card game built around forced card transfers, automatic pair removal, hand management, and an increasingly tense endgame once the draw deck is exhausted. The project includes physical playtesting, rules refinement, and a lightweight online prototype.

Holdout

Project Overview

Holdout is an original elimination card game for two to six players. It uses one standard deck of playing cards, including the jokers, and requires no custom components.

Each player begins with five cards. On every turn, the player draws a card and then gives one card from their hand to another player. Whenever a player holds two cards of the same value, the matching pair is immediately revealed and discarded. A player is eliminated when their hand becomes empty, and the last player still holding cards wins.

The Design Idea

The central design decision in Holdout is to reverse a familiar card-game objective. Instead of trying to empty their hand, players must preserve at least one card while reducing the hands of their opponents.

This creates a compact system in which giving away a card is both necessary and potentially dangerous. A transfer can create a pair in another player’s hand, but it can also strengthen the receiver’s position.

Player Interaction and Endgame

Holdout is built around direct player interaction. Players choose both the card they will transfer and the opponent who will receive it, making every turn affect the larger state of the table. Players may announce or show the card they are giving away, but may choose to do neither or lie about what was given away to give themselves an advantage.

When the draw deck is exhausted, discarded cards are not reshuffled. Players stop drawing and continue only by transferring cards. This changes the pace and strategic pressure of the game because the remaining card supply can no longer increase.

In cases where the last two players each share one card, the player who made the final play is considered the winner.

Development and Iteration

I developed Holdout from its initial rules concept through physical playtesting and digital prototyping. Feedback from more than 20 playtesters helped me refine the core mechanics, improve rule clarity, and adjust the balance and player experience.

I also created a lightweight online version to communicate the game’s systems and make the prototype easier to test and share.
